Teaching approach
Guidance without giving the problem away.
My aim is not simply to demonstrate solutions. Students are
encouraged to explore problems independently, persist when an
approach does not immediately work and develop a toolkit that
allows them to become unstuck.
For admissions tests, problem solving and interviews, students
are normally given carefully selected material to work on before
and after sessions. Their attempts provide the starting point for
discussion, allowing lessons to focus on the ideas and decisions
that matter most.
1
Independent preparation
Students attempt carefully chosen problems before sessions.
2
Purposeful hints
Guidance is designed to restart productive thinking without
removing the challenge.
3
Reflection and consolidation
Follow-up work helps students recognise transferable methods
and use them independently.
